Why Kickstarter?

We’ve been writing music together as Penny Rae for a while now and finally have reached the point where we feel we are ready to make a record.  We’re super-excited to share the songs we have written!  Unfortunately, the funds to make the record (and make it well) aren’t quite in place.

There are a few different ways to fix this problem.  One is to put the whole record on credit.  We’ve spent too much time and effort getting debt free individually to really allow this to be an option.  It just sets up the band for failure, or at least a more difficult road than what is necessary.  Another way is to find an investor.  This is a viable option, though it is asking a lot of one person, and finding the right person to partner with can be difficult.  The third option is “crowdfunding.”  This is the option we’ve decided to go with.

Crowdfunding is where we turn to people interested in our product and ask them to purchase the product before release in order to help fund the record during the process.  There are a few different websites that handle crowdfunding campaigns, and we decided to go with Kickstarter because of it’s reputation and past success with similar artists.

We have enough material for a full-length record, but are looking to record the best 6 songs and release them as an EP.  The total cost to produce the EP (and produce it well) is actually more than $3500, but we have been able to streamline certain parts of the process and fund parts of the process ourselves.

You can help fund this record by donating any amount of money.  Starting at $5 you will get an advanced digital download of the record, and there are plenty of incentives offered for larger amounts.  You can find all the details about this at the Kickstarter website.

We’re also looking forward to sharing updates throughout the recording process with you guys!  The studio, producer, and musicians lined up for this record are awesome, and this helps us to make a great record to put in your hands!

Thank you so much for your help!

What’s coming in 2013?

We’ve now looked back at 2012, and we’re excited as we look forward to 2013.  In 2012 we released 2 singles and had a TV appearance along with some live performances.  In 2013 we’re looking to play live extensively (and outside of the Nashville area!) and record our first EP.

We’ve been writing for a while and are just about ready to head into the studio to record the rest of the record.  We will be sharing some ways for you to partner with us in the making of the record.  The simplest way will be to pre-order the record, though there will be additional opportunities beyond that for people who are interested.  All of the details on how to help make this record a reality (and to help us pay cash for the record instead of going into debt as so many bands do) are coming VERY soon, so please keep your eyes on the website, Facebook, and Twitter for more details.

Another way for you to partner with us is to help bring us to your town!  We’d love to meet every one of you and share our music with you in a live setting.  For a lot of bands, the only venues where this can become a reality is in a bar or club.  While we will play some of these venues (and if you can help hook one of these shows up, by all means… please do!), we’re also set up to play house shows.  All you have to do is bring us in and invite your friends.  Seriously.  We would love to come to your house, play some tunes (we may even cover your favorite non-Penny Rae song), share some food, and meet you and all your friends and family.  We travel very inexpensively and can generally make things work financially for a lot less than you would expect.  A lot of times this can be covered just by merchandise sales and minimal donations/tips.  Just email booking@pennyraemusic.com to start working out the details (and we won’t list your address or any contact info on our website once it’s booked – we do respect your privacy :) )

We’re very excited about what 2013 holds for Penny Rae and are looking forward to bringing you along for the journey!

2012 in Review… TV

For a band that officially launched on November 13th with no prior fanfare (seriously, we didn’t even have a name until October 30th), we had some really cool things happen in 2012.  Among those things was an appearance on Nashville’s Fox affiliate, Fox 17.  You can view the video of “Wake Up” as well as our interview segment below.

2012 in Review… “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”

When Andrew was asked this year to record a Christmas song for his company’s Christmas EP (yes, in Nashville this is the way we do things – instead of ChBaby It's Cold Cover finalristmas cards we send out records!), it seemed natural to incorporate Randi and make the song a Penny Rae event.  We toyed around with a few different songs to cover, but ultimately landed on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”

Since the cost of recording was already covered, we decided to release it for free on NoiseTrade.  To say that it was received well on NoiseTrade would be a bit of an understatement.  At last count the song has been downloaded in 47 different states (if you know anybody in Montana, Vermont, or Rhode Island – help us out), 7 Canadian provinces, and 22 different countries from every inhabited continent (edit – now 23 countries)!

If you haven’t yet checked it out and still want to get it for FREE (it’s really more of a winter song than a Christmas tune, after all, and still applies), go here.

2012 in Review… “Wake Up”

number 54 for the blogIn case you missed it, we released our first single to iTunes and Amazon on November 13th. Check it out here.

It was a blast to follow the charts and see our song hovering around some HUGE artists that we love to listen to.  We grew up on artists like Sheryl Crow, James Taylor, and Simon & Garfunkel, and have become huge fans of The Civil Wars and Ed Sheeran recently.  To see our name among theirs with our very first release was obviously exciting!

This was our first venture in writing together, so thankfully people have responded well and encouraged us to write for our upcoming EP…

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!  We wish you a great year, and look forward to everything we get to share with you this year!

Free Christmas Music!

Baby It's Cold Cover final

There’s a lot going on with Penny Rae this week!  Our TV appearance on the Nashville Fox station has been bumped to Thursday, but will air at about 8:30 Central in the Nashville area and will also be available for live streaming on Fox17.com.  We are playing tonight in Murfreesboro, TN at Jozoara Coffee Shop at 7:30.  And last but not least, we are giving you some free Christmas music!

The day before we released “Wake Up” we went into the studio to record the Christmas classic “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”  Now it’s available for FREE through NoiseTrade.  Be sure to check it out, share it with your friends, and let us know what you think!

Upcoming Events and News

Even with a single coming out the next day and while still writing for the EP, we entered the studio on Monday night to record our version of the Christmas classic “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”  We were privileged to work with Andy Walker again, and we’re hopeful that all of you will be just as excited to hear the song as we were to record it.  We’ll be releasing if for FREE through Noisetrade within the next couple of weeks!  Stay tuned on Twitter, Facebook, and here for more updates on the release date.

If you would like an opportunity to see us perform, your first couple of opportunities are coming on November 27th:

  • We will be performing on Nashville’s Fox 17 Tennessee Mornings.  We’ll perform “Wake Up” as well as have an interview segment.  If you’re not in Nashville, this will be streaming through Fox17.com
  • That night we will be performing at 7:30 as part of Jozoara Coffee Shop’s weekly writer’s night in Murfreesboro, TN.  Be sure to come on out, grab a cup of coffee (the Jozoara mocha is amazing), and hang out with Randi and Andrew for the evening!

Now it’s time to go write some more…

Thank you guys for your support of Penny Rae!
